Sinn Féin Councillor Catherine Seeley has welcomed confirmation from the Department of Health's Permanent Secretary, Richard Pengelly that he intends to implement the Protect Life 2 Suicide Prevention Strategy.

Cllr Nelson said:

"The Protect Life 2 Strategy will play a crucial role in helping to ensure there is greater cooperation and coordination of services to help save lives lost to suicide.

"Sinn Féin will be requesting a meeting with the Health Permanent Secretary to ask him to outline the plans for the implementation of the suicide prevention strategy and to express our frustration that it took so long."

In Conclusion Mrs Nelson said:

"In recent days I and John O'Dowd MLA have met with a community based charity which does sterling work to help prevent suicide. Community organisations are often to the fore of prevention and reaction to suicides, they too need supported.

"As much as the new strategy will help it must be adequately funded to help deliver for those individuals and communities in crisis."
